DuPont SRW Employees Federal Credit Union was chartered in October of 1948 to serve the employees of the DuPont SRW plant in Orange, TX. In 2006, we changed our name to Sabine Federal Credit Union and became community chartered to be able to provide products and services to persons who live, work, worship, or attend school in Orange County. Currently, we are tri-county chartered to serve Orange, Jefferson and Hardin Counties.
A credit union is a unique financial institution. It is not a bank. It is not a savings and loan association. In fact, it isn’t really in existence for the purpose of making money. The credit union philosophy is “not for profit, but for service.”
A credit union is actually a financial cooperative. It is owned by the members, and it enables all of the members to pool their savings, lend them to one another, and own the organization where they save, borrow, and receive other financial services. Another difference about a credit union is that its Board of Directors is not made up of the largest stockholders, but instead is a body of volunteers, elected by the credit union members.
When you’re a member of a credit union, you’re an owner. That makes a big difference!
